I was exposed to art at a young age by my mom's fashion designs and my father's science fiction drawings, however my personal interest in art truly took hold in middle school when I discovered the world of graffiti and street art. I was enamored by the vibrant colors and characters that seemed to pop right off of the wall.

I had recently been hoping to do a custom shoe design, but it kept getting pushed to the back burner. I saw this competition listed in the Artist Opportunity newsletter that the Arts Council puts out, and I figured it was the perfect opportunity to make it happen. I had never painted a shoe up until that point, so it was kind of a new medium for me.
I landed on the design that I did to pay homage to the sneakerhead tradition of licking the clean sole of a new shoe. I wanted to give them "a tasty visual".
I had planned to incorporate some more basketball-themed elements on the other side of the shoe, but I ran short on time. I plan to finish both shoes and post them in the near future.

I did learn some techniques from the winner of the competition, Bryan Head, though. He told me he was surprised to learn that I had not painted shoes before, and he shared some of the techniques he used to accomplish full-coverage in a short period of time. Very cool dude.
My design is a rather abstract depiction of a tongue, teeth and eye flying forward from the back of the shoe.
I had originally intended to create a gradient background using spray paint, but the venue wasn't ideal for that due to the lack of ventilation. In hindsight, I should have utilized the sponges to create the gradient with the sneaker paint.

I used Deco Color markers in addition to the Tarrago Sneaker Paint, and they gave a cool glossy effect to the shoe that many people said they enjoyed.
I am super thankful to @martkd and @patternmagazine for pulling this awesome event. It was a super fun challenge, and I got to network with a ton of local creatives in the process.
If your readers dig my work, they can find paintings, prints, and merch of mine on my website at www.bezol-one.com They can also get ahold of me through the 'Inquiries' tab if they are interested in a mural or other custom paintings or graphics.
