Phil Ramilo used art to communicate when he arrived in the USA without knowing how to speak English and art has evolved to be the language he is most fluent on speaking. Here is his story about art, himself and of course sneaker customization.

I am 36 years old, however when it comes to Phil Ramilo the artist, I always see my self as a kid who's always seeking to learn new techniques or unique ways of expressing my self.  Being an artist is a blessing,  being able to capture or evoke people's emotion is one of the most gratifying feeling an artist could ever accomplish; therefore, I always try to do just that every time I create a piece of art.

I didn't appreciate art till I moved to the US from the Philippines 1999.  Not knowing how to speak English and wasn't able to communicate how I feel, I used my artwork as my way of communicating. I became one with my artwork and it served as my journal. It's my way of documenting my journey in life.  Failure or success. It's the language I am most fluent on speaking.

I love mixed-media, I don't like being compelled to just use one medium. I love mixing wood, metal, and paint. 3D art mixed with 2D. Whether it's tattooing,  painting, sculpture, or shoe design.. I started customizing sneakers in 2005. I learned to take shoes apart and hand stitch them back together, or engraving on shoes. I love creating. This competition was another way for me to showcase my talent.

I chose love or grenade heart because I honestly feel like that everything we do in this world and how we treat people should or is always from the heart whether it's good or bad.  Therefore; I used the heart grenade as a symbol that our heart is the lynch pin or the starting point for equality, exclusiveness and diversity.  Also, hearth is a weapon, it can be use for good or bad. I also used the word love but hid it behind the patterns where it's more visible when you step back.

The Tarrago Sneakers Paint we used during the competition adheres to the shoe very well. My only advice is to not apply it too thick because it takes longer to dry.
