Bryan Head, or ht_customkickz as you may know how from Instagram, was the winner of one of the categories of the 'Celebrate Artists' Art on Sneakers Competition organized by MARTK'D and Pattern Magazine this weekend during March Madness Final Four. Here are his thoughts...

ABOUT HIMSELF... I’m just a Dad, coach, scout leader and husband. I work at a factory in southern Indiana working third shift. I received an associate degree in Graphic Design and am not using it, until I started my passion company, HT Custom Kickz. It all started because my cousin wanted a pair of custom cleats. He plays baseball for Vincennes University. He wore them and someone else wanted a pair, and so on and so on.

ABOUT HIS JOURNEY TO ART... Growing up, my mom was an artist. She painted our glass doors for every holiday or birthday and even painted murals at my school. She was a big influence for my desire to draw and paint. I lost my mom 10 years ago and I create art because it helps me feel connected with her. I am trying to keep the tradition with my kids. We would sit down and pull out sketch books and draw fortnite characters. They actually like to give me ideas for sneakers projects and try to create videos for me and my social media platforms.

ABOUT MEANS OF EXPRESSION... I love art. I have carved in wood, etched on glass, painted murals and pretty much anything else someone said, CAN YOU….??? But this past year, I created HT Custom Kickz and have “sole”-ly customized sneakers for clients.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION... I have never won or even entered a competition before. I wanted to see if I could stand up to other artists. I love to create kickz that expresses your (the clients) personality. I think I was ready for a challenge to do it within a limited time. Most of my sneakers take 2-4 days to create since I work a full time job on the side. (HaHa)

ABOUT HIS THEME SELECTION... I wanted to incorporate both the Men’s and Women’s NCAA final four, in light of the recent inequity of the women NCAA tournament. I wanted to represent all the women and their teams who played hard to get to the tournament in Texas.

ABOUT HIS DESIGN... I used the NCAA Final four logo for both the Women’s and Men’s Tournaments along with the NCAA logo on the heal. I started with a rainbow base coat starting with orange on the toe box to create a basketball. On the women’s side, I painted a female running down the court. On the men’s side, I have one player blocking the shot from another player. The Rainbow ends in blue for the NCAA logo the heal.

Finally his tips or tricks to share with you – Follow (on social media) other artists. I have learned all kinds of tricks and tips and continue to change my techniques for painting to how I photograph my shoes to post on various platforms. ALWAYS Push yourself and never stand still. Continue to do what you love…
