Hi! My name is Meghan Curran, I am a 23 year old, queer, multidisciplinary artist from Indianapolis, IN.

I recently graduated from Herron School of Art and Design where I studied Drawing and Illustration. Since then my practice has expanded to include screen printing and installation work. My work is always inspired by LGBTQIA+ culture, Pop Art, and the 1980’s.

I have had work shown in both Indianapolis, IN and Florence, Italy, and I recently had work featured in the New York Times.

I signed up for the shoe art competition as a way to challenge myself as an artist, and to connect more with other Indianapolis artists. Community is an important part of being an artist, and with Covid it has been difficult to share inspiration and resources with one another. This was a really great opportunity for everyone involved to expand their circles, connect, and get to know each other.

I have never customized or painted sneakers before so I knew this would be a really fun challenge and great opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone.

The biggest challenge was definitely the time limit. I am not a very fast worker and I like to take my time with my art, so the time limit was super challenging for me.

I love how my shoes turned out! They have a trans flag wrapping around them, a little basketball player, and say #LetKidsPlay on them. They were inspired by trans and gendernonconforming athletes and the fight for inclusivity in sports. In 2021 alone lawmakers in at least 17 states have introduced legislation to keep trans children out of sports. Every child deserves the opportunity to participate in sports with their peers.
